Clothing is a design language and a collective memory, which includes and represents the past, present and future.
It is therefore not independent of historic developments. Clothing can be assigned to a certain time or be characterized by a time and its specific and societal, political, and design developments. The job of fashion designers is to search for a groundbreaking expression for their own time and to thereby shape this time.
Defining, developing, and plausibly portraying the personal expression of this conceptual additional value and with respect to the historical context is the focus of the fashion designer curriculum at the Berlin University of the Arts - Universität der Künste Berlin.
The study programm is offered as a 4-year bachelor’s course and a 1-year master course - the culmination of which is the yearly fashion show and open day.
